Think about how often you run your dryer each year. Ever wondered just how much doing so costs you? Like many, the thought of how much drying laundry costs has probably crossed your mind at least once, either out of mere curiosity or because you want to figure out how to cut expenses. Well, good news. You actually can figure out how much it costs to dry your clothes each year with the (fairly) simple equation below!
To do the equation, you’ll have to gather a few numbers. The first number needed is an estimate of how much power your dryer consumes while in use. For this number, we suggest checking the manual that came with your dryer. If you no longer have the manual, though, just know that most dryers consume 3000 watts (3kw) to 5000 watts (5kw) of power when used.
The next number you’ll need is the cost of electricity in your area. This number is easy because you can find it on your electric bill! Just take a look at how much it costs per kilowatt hour (it will probably be around $.10 for distribution and $0.09 for electricity or so).
And the final number you need to figure out is the number of hours per week you use your dryer. So, just take a minute to note how long the dryer is in use each day for a week to get that number.
Once you’ve gathered all your figures, it’s time to calculate! Before you can find how much running your dryer per year costs, though, you need to find out how much it costs per week. To do this, multiply the number of kilowatts when in use by the cost of electricity by how many hours per week laundry is done.
For example: 5 (kilowatts) x $.19 (cost of electricity) x 5 (hours a week of laundry) = $4.75 per week
And, of course, just multiply that weekly number by 52 (the number of weeks in a year) to find how much you’re spending a year to run your dryer. Pretty simple, right?
Knowing how much you’re spending on running the dryer each year means you can figure out areas where you might be able to save a bit of money while doing laundry. One simple way to save some money on laundry is by reducing the energy you use running the dryer, and one of the best ways to accomplish that is by having your dryer vents serviced each year. The cleaner your vents, the more energy-efficient your dryer will be and the more you will save!
