It’s nearly Thanksgiving! Who’s ready to enjoy time with the family and tons of food? We certainly are. We’re also ready to share a wealth of Thanksgiving fire safety tips with you.
You may not have known, but the holiday season is when the majority of home fires occur. The U.S. Fire Administration reported that for every year between 2017 and 2019 there were 2,300 fires that happened on Thanksgiving Day. These fires caused about $26 million in property loss, 26 injuries, and 5 deaths.
That isn’t the sort of thing you want to have to deal with this holiday season, so here are a few tips that will help keep you and your family safe this Thanksgiving!
Thanksgiving Fire Safety Tips
With these tips you’ll be sure to stay safer this Thanksgiving, so you can concentrate on turkey and pie and fun.
- If you use candles during the holiday, ensure they are kept well out of reach of not only children, but also pets. Also, put them somewhere that is far away from any flammable items.
- There’s a lot of cooking to be done on Thanksgiving Day, which means the stove is in constant use. Be sure you don’t have any flammable objects near the stove (yes, this includes potholders and towels!). This also includes items, such as aprons and food packaging. Anything close enough to catch fire from one of the eyes on the stove could lead to disaster.
- Homes get messy, especially when there are many people in the home, and everyone is busy preparing for the day. Kitchens, in particular, can turn into chaos at Thanksgiving, and if the kitchen floor isn’t clear of items, you risk tripping and falling right into the stove. So, clear away any toys, pets, children, etc.
- It isn’t only aprons that can brush against a stove eye and catch on fire. That can happen with any loose clothing or even long hair. So, be careful with what you’re wearing in the kitchen and pull hair back!
- This tip seems obvious, but it happens more than you’d think–don’t walk away from the kitchen in the middle of cooking! Sometimes we step into another room for just a minute to break up a fight between the kids or see what someone else is doing. But if you’re using the oven and several eyes of your stove and walk away, even for just a moment, you won’t be there to put out a fire if it starts. And it only takes a minute for things to go wrong.
- Keep a pot handy to smother potential grease fires!
It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and chaos of Thanksgiving, but remembering these fire safety tips will ensure you have a happy holiday filled with cheer.
