Did you know that September is National Preparedness Month? What is National Preparedness Month? This is observed every September as a reminder about the importance of preparing ahead in case of emergency or disaster, whether it’s a natural disaster, a fire in your home, or even potential carbon monoxide poisoning. Not sure where to get started when it comes to preparing for home emergencies like fire and carbon monoxide? Here are a few tips that will help you out; implement these to protect yourself and your loved ones all year!
- Have your dryer vents serviced yearly! Some, but not all dryers, can emit carbon monoxide while they’re in use. Typically, this carbon monoxide is vented through the dryer vent to the outside of your home. But if your vents are clogged up with lint, debris, or birds’ nests, the carbon monoxide won’t be vented outside but will escape into your home instead. If that goes on long enough, this gas will buildup high enough to cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Every year there are over 15,000 dryer related fires; cleaning your dryer vent annually is a great preparedness service.
- Birds and rodents love warm places like dryer vents! We offer pest proof covers which are a great preventative step to keeping these unwanted critters out of our home.
- Have a carbon monoxide detector in your home, and remember to check the batteries twice a year (and replace as needed).
- If your carbon monoxide detector goes off, get everyone out of the home immediately and call 911.
- Prevent potential carbon monoxide poisoning. Have gas, oil, and coal burning appliances, as well as your water heater and heating system, serviced by a professional once a year.
- Don’t try to heat your home with a gas oven!
- Have smoke alarms in each room of your home. Check the batteries in those once a year and replace as needed.
- Test alarms monthly to be sure they’re working.
- Create a fire escape plan for your family and go over it twice a year with your family.
Unfortunately, disasters and emergencies wait for no one, so have a plan in place before they strike is extremely beneficial. Preventing disasters and emergencies from occurring (as much as you can) goes a long way in keeping your family safe, too. So, this National Preparedness Month, do what you can to prepare ahead!
