Want to Save Money on Your Home? Here’s How!

Home ownership is expensive, especially these days. It isn’t just the cost of purchasing a home that costs so much, though; there are also expenses such as appliances, monthly bills, and more. Saving money where you can is essential, but how can you do that? Here are a few things you can do to save some money each month.

Interestingly, one way to save money each month is by keeping your freezer and fridge as full as possible. It sounds odd, but it actually makes sense. When you open the freezer or fridge door, air escapes, so the fuller your appliance is, the shorter the time it takes for it to lower the temperature once again when the door is closed again. Refrigerators are one of the most expensive appliances that runs in a home, so saving money and energy where you can with it is essential. Don’t have enough food to fill your fridge up? Fill empty jugs with water to help take up space!

Your energy bill can be another huge expense, mostly because there are lots of appliances in the home considered “energy vampires” (aka they suck up tons of energy). Those energy vampires can cost you up to $100 extra every year, but getting that money back is fairly simple. You only need to unplug these energy vampires when they’re not in use! So, appliances that aren’t being used, phone chargers, your television, and more should be unplugged when not in use to save money.

Another way to save money you might not have considered? Changing your light bulbs! Replace bulbs in the most often used lights with LED bulbs, if you aren’t already using LEDs. LED bulbs consume up to 80% less energy than many other types of light bulbs, so you’ll automatically save money. Another thing to do when it comes to lights? Turn them off whenever you leave a room! Many people think leaving a light or two on isn’t a big deal, but the energy those lights use up can add up over time and cost you money. Switching the lights off when not in use is one of the simplest ways there is to make home ownership more affordable.

There are a couple of other easy things you can do to save a few bucks, too. One is to lower the temperature on your water heater. Keeping the temperature on this between 130 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit can save you money, scalding from overly hot showers, and energy! And did you know that the average home wastes $200 to $400 each year on drafty doors and windows? Drafty doors and windows cause air leaks that cause your home to have to work harder to stay warm, which takes up more energy. Just applying weatherstripping or utilizing a draft snake can save you hundreds.

Finally, one of the most significant ways you’re losing money at home is by not having your dryer vents cleaned! Clogged dry vents make it more difficult for your dryer to work, which ends up costing you more money. In fact, ensuring your dryer vents are clean can save you about $24 a month. Another way to save money when it comes to laundry? Washing your clothes in cold water. Roughly 90% of the energy a washing machine uses goes toward heating up water, so doing this can save you tons.

Taking small steps like these will help you keep costs down and keep your home running smoothly. Over time these steps will put money back in your pocket which is definitely a good thing!
