Dryer Vent System Cleaning

Prevent clothes dryer fires in your house

Shakopee firefighters have recently responded to several fires caused by clothes dryers. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, each year 2,900 dryer fires are reported, causing death, injuries and an estimated $35 million in property loss.

Dryer fires are often preventable, since the leading cause of such dryers is failure to clean the dryer. It is recommended you clean the lint filter every time you use the dryer. Also, you should clean out your dryer vent at least once every 2 years, or more often if it’s taking longer than normal for clothes to dry. You can purchase a dryer vent cleaning kit from any home improvement center or do a search for dryer vent cleaning services in your area.

In addition to cleaning the lint filter and vent, follow these other simple safety tips to prevent a clothes dryer fire in your home:

Have your dryer installed and serviced by a professional
Clean behind the dryer where lint can build up
Check the vent for damage or other restriction
Make sure the outside vent opens when the dryer is operating and is free of other obstructions
Don’t overload the dryer
