Birds can be absolutely lovely when they’re happily chirping from a nearby tree, soaring majestically along the breeze, or hanging around the bird feeder in your yard. However, they are much less lovely when they decide that your home should also be theirs! Birds in your home are an annoyance, not to mention dirty, and if in your dryer vents, incredibly dangerous.
But wait? Why would birds even be in your dryer vents in the first place? It seems like an odd location for birds to set up shop, but when you think about it, it makes more sense. After all, dryer vents are located away from the ground, so they aren’t easily accessible to predators. Plus, they protect birds from the elements. And those things make your dryer vents a highly attractive place for a bird to build its nest (especially since the heat from a dryer vent helps incubate eggs). From a bird’s point of view, dryer vents are amazing. But this scenario is less amazing for you.
Besides the inconvenience of having a bird in your dryer vents, birds bring along a lot of potential disease. For one, birds carry bird mites, teensy little bugs that are similar to ticks in that they survive off blood. While they normally survive off the blood of birds, if a bird mite population grows out of hand, they’ll start to look at you as a tasty snack, too. They can’t actually survive off humans for too long, but while they’re trying, they’ll cause discomfort and skin irritation.
Another potential danger of having birds in your dryer vents is the increased risk of fire. Birds’ nests in a dryer vent line are a fire hazard. Think about all the twigs and grass that go into making a large, messy nest. Now consider all that stuffed somewhere it gets incredibly warm. It’s a disaster waiting to happen. Not to mention, you’ll be breathing in bird droppings and allergens from that nest in your vent, which makes things highly unsanitary and unhealthy.
So, the question is what do you do if you find out you have birds or a bird’s nest in your dryer vents? (And, trust us, you’ll know. You’ll either hear them making noise or you’ll smell a very bad odor coming from there.) Well, if you have live birds in your vents, you’ll want to call in a professional (critter control) to get them out, so the birds can be removed humanely and safely. If the birds have already flown the nest (but left said nest behind), you’re going to want that vent cleaned out and cleaned out well. In that case, it’s best to call in the dryer vent experts, as we can remove every last speck of bird and bird habitat that’s been left behind!
